Open Source Seeds

CSA is working on Open Source Seed Systems.

  1. Conservation and revival of existing varieties: Organise farmers interested in conservation to recover and retrieve seed varieties that were in use or that are still in use, and popularise them among farmers. This helps farmers not only in rediscovering old varieties, but also in preserving them.
  2. Participatory Varietal Selection for Generating Value for Cultivation and Use data for existing varieties: Value for Cultivation and Use data is generated using Participatory Varietal Selection for improved varieties/traditional varieties, in various growing conditions and published as a catalogue in telugu. The English and Hindi versions will be released soon.
  3. Participatory Plant Breeding to evolve newer varieties/Hybrids: To develop new varieties/hybrids working with farmers, taking into account their specific needs and demands. Currently CSA is working on Cotton and Maize Hybrids which responds well to organic growing conditions. Two Organic Cotton Hybrids YNBH-1 and RCPH-1 are ready for farmers use.
  4. Seed Production and marketing: The farmer cooperatives are producing and marketing seeds locally.

Vegetable Seeds are available at Sahaja Aharam Cooperative.
